Cashier: “Wow that’s a big dog bed. What kind of dog is it for?”
Me: “It’s for a Chihuahua.”
Cashier: “Haha that’s funny. What kind of dog is it really for?”
Me: “No really. A Chihuahua.”
Cashier: “Um, why such a big bed for such a little dog?”
Me: “Well you see, I’m hoping that my Doberman will get to use this bed, but I doubt my Chihuahua will allow her to spend much time on it.”
Cashier: (completely confused) Oh.

This is what you get when you run out of a high-maintenance Chihuahua’s favorite treat. He still got a treat – just not the one he preferred. He’s always so excited when I put it in his mouth, he doesn’t even bother to look at it – I could probably give him a rock. Well, I gave him a different treat and he dropped it on the floor and stood there looking at me like “What the heck is this?” Normally, he guards his treats with his life, but this particular morning he walked away and went to pout under the table. Pablo’s sleeping habits recently got him a segment on America’s Cutest Dog, but this is getting ridiculous.

A while back I got a cheap little remote controlled puppy for the sole purpose of tormenting Ramsey and Pablo. I harassed them for a bit and we all quickly became bored with it. I put it in my large bookcase next to the infamous plastic canine which starred in box office thriller Doberman Fights Robot Dog. Every once in a while I would catch Ramsey staring at it, and probably visualizing how many pieces she would shred it into if I ever allowed her.

The other day I came home from plowing snow. I’m always greeted at the door by Ramsey and eventually Pablo once he finds his way out of his elaborate nest of blankets. This particular morning, only Pablo welcomed me home. This usually means that Ramsey did something which will land her in trouble. I began to wonder. What did she do? Tear up a toy? Eat Pablo’s bone? I surveyed the area as I walked into the office where I found Ramsey clutching on to this battery-powered menace and looking at me like she just robbed a bank. I tried talking to her in that ‘disappointed’ voice to let her know I wasn’t happy that she managed to pull it off the third shelf, but I was laughing at the same time so I don’t think I sounded very convincing! Not to mention, I teased her and Pablo for hours with this toy so I could hardly get upset with her for wanting revenge. I tried pulling the puppy out of her clutches, but she had such a grip on it that I was actually picking her front half up off the ground! She wanted it sooooo badly. At this point, I was laughing out loud. Instead of playing tug-of-war, I grabbed the camera and this was the result. Note how her paws are wrapped around it!

Update: Ramsey has since pulled the remote and cord off because it was getting in her way. She carries it everywhere she goes. I think Pablo is getting jealous.

Last fall, the popular website Famous Chihuahua, posted a poll to help decide just who was the world’s most famous Chihuahua. Click directly on the image to view the poll and the results.

I couldn’t help but notice that my roommate Pablo was included in the poll along with several other undisputed well-known Chihuahuas. To be honest, I shrugged off the possibility that Pablo could contend with these heavy hitters, but when the polls opened, I was amazed by the numbers! Now, do I actually think that more people are aware of Pablo than the ‘Taco Bell dog’? Probably not. But in the spirit of the contest, you have to consider that most people never even knew her name. Not to mention, she was one of three dogs used throughout the ad campaign. The same could be said for Paris Hilton’s dog. Tinkerbell was probably more known by name than Gidget (Taco Bell dog), but their short and sporadic television appearances never really gave any insight into what their personalities were like. And if you saw either of them walking down the street, would you recognize them?

The power of YouTube.

Pablo has been seen more than sixteen million times on YouTube and millions more thanks to numerous television appearances which were a result of his internet fame. His somewhat unique markings, his slightly pudgy frame and his love-hate relationship with a certain Doberman Pinscher makes him pretty unmistakable.
